NFL Playoffs and Coaching Interviews

At the end of every season you have two groups; one group fighting for the title and one group trying to re-build to compete next season. The group of teams that are looking for the edge next season are conducting interviews with college coaches, front office personnel, and crazy enough other coaches that are still coaching in playoff games. This to me is one of the weirdest things in the NFL, interviewing for a job while you are working towards the title. Perfect example, Dan Quinn of the Cowboys had a number of interviews this past week leading up to their divisional play off game against the 49ers. Quinn and other coaches are being pulled away from focusing on winning to interview for potential future jobs. I understand that the goal for other teams is to get the edge early and fast, but I don't understand what a couple of months could change.

The NFL needs to review and change the policies for interviewing coaches, especially during the playoffs. The NFL pushes this narrative of being a team and working together to win, yet they allow for coaches to leave the team to interview during playoffs. Look, every football fan understands that anyone can be let go at any time in the NFL. Although we expect coaches to assist in leading their teams to win the championships and lead the team. The problem with this is that the NFL allows teams to jeopardize their season by allowing coaches to interview with other teams for head coaching positions. Coaches are extremely prepared, but why potentially affect the outcome of the game by taking time away to "help" another team. This process is so weird and again just shows that the NFL is a business and teams will do anything to get an edge on the other.

Coach interviews need to be changed to the end of the season, which will allow for the best football we all deserve. Allow for coaches to fully focus on the games they are preparing for and for fans to get the best games/teams in playoff football. The NFL will always be scrutinized for their practices and how they do things, but this something that needs to change. Interviewing coaches during playoffs for other teams is something that affects fans and teams alike.
