The Padres Mess

If you would've told me on opening day that on 8/2 the Padres would be 53-55, 8.5 games out of 1st, and 5 games out of the last wild card spot, it would not have computed in my optimistic Padres fan brain. But here we are witnessing exactly that. To say this season has been frustrating to watch is an understatement on a colossal level. Whatever can go wrong, has gone wrong basically. Here's a breakdown of what has gone on for far too long:

Whatever can go wrong, has gone wrong. To put it lightly it's been a TOUGH watch. A couple things that stand out about those grotesque numbers.... 0-10 in extra innings is bananas city. Every team starts with a guy at 2nd base and we haven't been able to win 1? Not 1. I'd love to know the mathematical probability on that. Most recent extra innings disaster was at the dreaded Coors Field versus the Rockies (who happen to be one of the worst teams in baseball). Bases loaded, nobody out.

Xander Bogarets - ground ball to 2nd, throws it home, 1 out.

Jake Cronenworth- soft liner to SS, caught, 2 outs

Gary Sanchez - ground ball to 3rd, out at first, 0 runs.

I defy you to find something more disgusting than that offensively. And that's really what it's been all year, as the numbers reflect. Anytime we get guys on base everything stops, we do not get the hit when we need it. We either win outright or the opposing team fights back and takes it from us, like clockwork. 6-18 in 1 run games is equally disgusting, that's just a team that when faced with adversity folds like a pancake. Soft.

Bullpen. Luis Garcia and Tim Hill have completely lost it. They are guaranteed to give up at least 1 run every time they enter the game. They have been a mass contributor to why the record in 1 run game is so bad. They give up the lead like they are in a rush to do it and Melvin continues to put them out there. I just don't get it man. It always baffles me that in professional baseball the manager can make such avoidable decisions on a nightly basis. I get you have guys you have to pitch in the bullpen but come on man. You know what's going to happen and so do I so don't bring them in.

That's a brief takeaway, I can't get into everything that runs through my head on a 24 hour news cycle. We'd be here all day and it would just sound too whiny. But that's the bare bones of it all, we have a $250 million dollar payroll, superstars left and right, and we aren't winning baseball games. From the highest of highs in last years triumph over the Dodgers to where we are now it's hard to believe we can get back on track.

The month of August and September can fix everything or they can continue to playing the way they are and it will be the most disappointing team in the history of the MLB. By far. I don't want to live in that universe! I want to live in the universe where the Padres figure everything out and get red hot before the playoffs! We have the players to do it, we really actually do. So we'll see what happens. I'll wait until the end of the season to give a full review but right now I have little hope in the turnaround. It's a coping mechanism for all the nonsense that's gone on this year when I was all in. Time will tell, please figure it out Padres.
