Back to the Basics: Build the Line

The main focus that GM Ryan Poles needs to have going into the 2025 NFL Draft and free agency is addressing the offensive line. If last season taught us anything, it’s that shiny objects i.e. Caleb Williams, DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, Keenan Allen, & D’Andre Swift, are not enough to build sustainable success around. The big men in the trenches may not get the shine or glory, but they are what makes the wheel turn. In Caleb Williams rookie season, he was sacked 68 times which ties David Carr for the 3rd most ever in an NFL season. This is not a new concept to the Bears shortcomings as previous QB Justin Fields was sacked 55 times just 2 years ago in only 15 games played. In order for any offense to function efficiently, the quarterback needs time to operate. It's just that simple.
With 3 selections in the top 41 of the upcoming NFL Draft, there should be no doubt which position group the Bears will be addressing. Sitting in the first round at #10, they are in prime position to take either OT Will Campbell (LSU) or OT Kelvin Banks Jr. (Texas) to establish a legitimate bookend tackle opposite of OT Darnell Wright. Between the two, I prefer Campbell due to his size and his history playing for a mobile quarterback in Jayden Daniels. Then with one of their picks in the 2nd round I’m taking OG Donovan Jackson out of Ohio State. In the national championship versus Notre Dame, he was a dominant force which directly contributed to Ohio State’s 214 yard rushing attack and ensuing victory. If the Bears come away with 2 offensive lineman in these 3 selections I would count that as a HUGE win for this franchise. More than the player's potential, it would show this fanbase that Ryan Poles is committed to protecting Caleb Williams and building this offense from the inside out. A concept that has been fantasized about rather than acted on in recent history.

Some key free agent names to keep your eye on as well are Zack Martin (DAL) &Trey Smith (KC). When healthy, Martin is a top tier offensive lineman and has been a key piece for the Cowboys offense for the better part of 10 years. Along with that, he is a highly respected individual who would provide instant leadership to a locker room under a new regime. Conversely, Trey Smith is a transformative piece that would complement this prospective young offensive line perfectly. He’s a 2x Super Bowl champion and at only 25 years of age, gives the Bears a unique opportunity to build continuity on the line for years to come.
